Expression Web CSS
Creating CSS and applying the created styles in Expression web is really rather simple but for the different methods of doing so. You could say its six of one and half a dozen of the other!
You will recall from our CSS introduction that we have various types of styles at our disposal. External, Internal and inline. For me, using an external style sheet is without the best option. External style sheets are just that. The style is kept separate from the HTML code. This means that when you want to change a style, you do it in one place, the external style sheet.
Expression web allows you to create styles in a number of different ways.
Page formatting
As in the old FrontPage way, EW allows you to style text on the page using the formatting tool bar but instead of filling your code with <font> tags and other code soup, EW creates a style based on your formatting. This is very cool and works exceptionally well except that the style is applied automatically using a .class and a span! No problems there except that the style is inline and unique to the elements that use the style. So when you want to change the style, you need to visit all pages that use it.
However all is not lost. Once you have formatted the text and applied the style, it is possible to drag the style and have it as part of your external style sheet. Examples are shown below.
Early news - The actual download is quite buggy and will take a bit of time to download and install. Microsoft are attending to this matter and i guess a less buggy download will be available in a day or two. The effort on your part though will be richly rewarded. This is your chance to experience the next generation of web site designing and be part of the community who help to make Expression Web the best web site design package on the market.
So why bother with Expression Web ?
Expression Web is the next generation of web site designing software from Microsoft. Its appearance is not unlike FrontPage but look a little more under the hood and a list of new features becomes apparent. The main push is to produce clean valid xhtml/css web sites with the minimum of fuss and the maximum ease of use!
When will Expression Web be on sale?
Expression Web does not yet have a specified release date. Given that the preview is quite buggy, don't hold your breath for a full retail version. Late 2006 to early 2007 is the current speculation. Expression offers, rss, xhtml, css, xml, xslt rss styling ,accessibility, web designer help, and what is more the interface is very similar to FrontPage.
